PTFE Coaxial Cable

What Is PTFE?

PTFE is the abbreviation for polytetrafluoroethylene, which is a fluoropolymer used in a variety of applications and industries. Most people recognize PTFE as the nonstick coating used in cookware. In the wire and cable industry, PTFE is used as insulation and jacketing material for several types of cable, including coaxial cable.

What Are the Benefits of PTFE in Coaxial Cable?

The properties of PTFE make it a great choice for coax cable. PTFE coaxial cable is very non-reactive and has a low dielectric constant rating, especially at high frequencies. This means that PTFE coax won’t hold as much electrostatic charge as other dielectric materials with a higher dielectric constant rating.

Which Types of Coaxial Cable Use PTFE?

There are several types of coaxial cables that use PTFE as the dielectric, the jacket, or even both.

  • RG142 cable: RG142 coaxial cable is constructed with a silver-coated copper clad steel conductor, PTFE dielectric, 2 silver-coated copper shields and a fiberglass jacket. Rated to 1900 vms, with an operating temperature range of minus 55 degrees Celsius and 250 degrees Celsius, it is typically used for interconnects or jumpers. View RG142 cable specifications.
  • RG178 cable: RG178 BU coax also has a silver-coated copper clad steel conductor, PTFE dielectric. It has a single silver-coated copper shield and a fluorinated ethylene propylene jacket. It has a 1000 vms rating and an operating temperature range of minus 55 degrees Celsius to 200 degrees Celsius. View RG178 cable specifications.
  • RG179 cable: RG179 coax also has a silver-coated copper clad steel conductor, PTFE dielectric, and a single silver-coated copper shield, but has a KEL-F jacket. A 75 ohm cable, RG179 is suited for use with cable TV and video. View RG179 cable specifications.
  • RG180 cable: RG180 coax is constructed of the same materials as RG179, but is rated at 95 ohms and had 15 pF/ft capacitance. As such, it is used more for data transmission over cable TV and video like RG179 cable. View RG180 cable specifications.
  • RG188 cable: RG188 AU coax has both a PTFE jacket and insulation, with a silver-coated copper clad steel conductor and a single silver-coated copper shield. It is rated to 1200 vms and can operate between 55 degrees Celsius and 250 degrees Celsius. View RG188 AU cables specifications.
  • RG316 cable: RG316 coax is constructed with a silver-coated copper clad steel conductor and a single silver-coated copper shield. It has solid PTFE dielectric and a fluorinated ethylene propylene jacket. Unlike RG178, RG316 coax is rated to 1200 vms and should be operated only between minus 55 degrees Celsius and 80 degrees Celsius. View RG316 cable specifications.
  • RG400 cable: RG400 coax cable has a silver-coated copper conductor and dual shield with solid PTFE dielectric and a fluorinated ethylene propylene jacket. It is rated to 1900 vms and can operate between minus 55 degrees Celsius and 200 degrees Celsius. View RG400 cable specifications.
